In 1080, the monks of the abbey of Cassan, in Hérault, set up a priory in La Clape. It welcomes travelers who walk through the inhospitable massif.
The name “Dame dals Auzils” was given in 1223, when the monks of Boulboune, in Ariège, bought the priory. The current chapel seems to have been built in 1635. Since then, it has been renovated and consolidated many times. As the building was not sheltered from humidity, a good number of its decorations, some of which were very valuable ex-votos, were gradually invaded by mould. Wishing to be helped for the renovation of these paintings, the inhabitants of the village succeeded in having the Chapel classified as a Historic Monument in 1964.
In 1973, the Auzils site was classified as a historic site.
